"Cowpoke" Cow Knuckle Bone and Antique Button Necklace

$ 87.00

Found in the eastern desert of Arizona, this cow knuckle bone has been vigorously cleaned, polished, and adorned with the sweetest antique button at its center. A wildly interesting piece of art, and a sure conversation starter. This design hangs on 23.5'' of sturdy stainless steel braided rope chain.

After each artifact or specimen has been discovered it is sent through a careful restoration process before being used in a design. If a particularly unique patina is found to add design value to an artifact, it is preserved and/or sealed to ensure its longevity and protection. Each and every item is made by hand by owners Nathan and Ali, therefore, some small imperfections or variations may be present in your design. To us, this only adds to the beauty and rarity of your particular piece. 1888 Design does not claim ownership over the design or production of any vintage, antique, or otherwise repurposed object used in the creation of our jewelry.

Each 1888 Design piece contains unique elements of symbolic or historic value that mean something different to us all. Let's break down what the elements in this design are

Cow

"My first job was working for a beef farmer in Vermont. I recall the bulls snorting in the cold morning air. Their long horns like great dawn sabers. The bulls seemed ever ready, stoic, immovable, yet simultaneously gave an ineffable assurance that it had the great beating heart of a gentle giant. They were kindly protective with their hearts resonating a low steady rhythm to the pasture below, the sky above and the herd to each side. Let us never forget the respect that such animals deserve for their gifts and sacrifices to humankind." -Nathan

Generally speaking, it’s thought that the cow represents patience and possibility. It is thought to be a symbol of growth and nurturing, and much like the deer, it is a positive symbol for one's life.

Claws, Teeth, Bones

Across human story, claws, teeth, bones and other animal remains have traditionally been worn to showcase a variety of things. One’s hunting prowess, social standing, medicinal knowledge, or place of origin could be assessed before a single word was spoken during an interaction. Nowadays, the wearing of these materials has become mostly symbolic. We’d like to think of wearing these materials as a form of respect paid to the animals for their contributions to our world, and serve as a potent reminder of the lessons that each being teaches us.

Buttons

Buttons are filled with storied symbolism, from the classic mother of pearl buttons made in the 1940s by the Lucky Day Co., to those still being pulled from the earth by metal-detecting hobbyists that fell from the uniforms of war soldiers. Buttons very much like coins were often engraved and printed with the insignia of our land, our people, or our cause. It’s touching to us to witness how important it is for people to wear and display the symbols of their own story, in even the smallest of places.

FAQ

Can I resize this item?

If a product page does not have a drop down option for size selections, or if the product description does not state a need for the customer to input their desired size in the notes section of their purchase, then we are NOT able to resize the item. Some exceptions can be made with chain lengths. Please reach out to us at inspire@1888design.com and we will try to accommodate as best we can.

Are your earrings hypoallergenic?

All earring posts are made out of sterling silver, stainless steel, or brass metals unless otherwise stated in the product description. Sterling silver and stainless steel are both hypoallergenic metals. Brass can react differently among different skin types, so we advise knowing your body's tolerance to brass prior to purchasing earrings with brass ear posts. Again, all metals used are stated in each product's description tab.
