Nathan’s Concept:

Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to an object giving it shape and form in a way that seems familiar; making these works of art unique to each observer. What do you see? A face, an animal, perhaps a word? In this way, these sculptures are intended to help the observer strengthen their ability to see the world with a more adaptable mind. There can be many answers to the same question and cultivating an understanding of this through artistic visual practices can enhances one's ability to see life in new ways. Making these works of art a particularly useful tool for meditation practice, strengthening empathy, and enlivening creativity. There is always something new to see in these sculptures but, it takes both the observer and the object's participation. In this way, the sculpture becomes more defined and unique to its owner as time passes.

A note on the process:

The raw materials for all sculptures are found and excavated by hand by Nathan before being worked using a process uniquely developed by artist & 1888 Design creator Nathan Mott.

In order to call a sculpture complete, The raw materials are put through a time-consuming sequence of steps where the stones surfaces are shaped, polished, or even dissolved before being signed and either mounted or felted in a way that best enhances the aesthetic of the piece.

A note on the artist:

A lifetime practicer of Wabi Sabi, Nathan believes there is always unexpected & inner beauty in all things. It takes the right kind of touch, the right amount of time & a patient willingness to see what could be, not only what is in plain sight.

A word from the artist:

“The raw materials I use are quite literally hard as stone, & stone does not give up its secrets easily. Trying to muscle your way through the process never leads to desirable results. Brute force will only serve to crack, chip, or injure the sculptor or sculpture. Rather, patient study, time, respect, & even a little romance is needed to reveal what's hiding within each piece of raw material. We wear our stories unknowingly & so to do the stones."
