"Dark Waters" Cowrie Shell, Mother of Pearl, Tahitian Pearl and Fossilized Shark Teeth Earrings

$ 297.00

This complex arrangement of both ancient and modern day sea dwellers tell a whimsical story of the different kinds of natural beauty our beloved waters hold. All deriving from once living beings, these organic shapes and gorgeous color pallet invoke inspiration and wonder for us. The abstract shapes, varying textures and asymmetrical design used here feels freeing to swim in the depths of creativity and imagination.

Cowrie shells, natural mother of pearl blisters, fossilized dusky and tiger shark teeth, and two Tahitian black pearls are used in this multi-ornamental design. Each individual element is set in sterling silver and fine silver metals and dangle freely below their sterling silver studded ear posts. They are relatively lightweight and measure 6.5 and 7cm long.

Components discovered in Sedona AZ, Manhattan Beach CA & Long Beach CA

After each artifact or specimen has been discovered it is sent through a careful restoration process before being used in a design. If a particularly unique patina is found to add design value to an artifact, it is preserved and/or sealed to ensure its longevity and protection. Each and every item is made by hand by owners Nathan and Ali, therefore, some small imperfections or variations may be present in your design. To us, this only adds to the beauty and rarity of your particular piece. 1888 Design does not claim ownership over the design or production of any vintage, antique, or otherwise repurposed object used in the creation of our jewelry.

Each 1888 Design piece contains unique elements of symbolic or historic value that mean something different to us all. Let's break down what the elements in this design are

Cowrie Shell

Cowrie is the common name for a group of seasnails in the Cypraeidae family, in which the popular cowrie shell derives from. Throughout history these have been arguably some of the most valuable shells in the world. Even the word “porcelain” comes from the old Italian word for cowrie shell, porcellana, because of its strikingly similar appearance. It is widely known that native Africans used these shells as currency, though some records show evidence of cowries being used in Ancient Egypt, China, and India as a means of currency and exchange as well. These shells served well as a mark of trade because of their desired variety of uses. For centuries, cowrie shells have been used in jewelry, gaming/gambling (as counting pieces similar to dice), and even ritualistic use. Many cultures saw the cowrie shell as a potent symbol of womanhood, fertility, birth or wealth (due to its similar appearance to the female anatomy), therefore, this shell was often a key element in ceremonies regarding reproduction and communicating with divinities.

Mother of Pearl

The iridescent lining of a sea mollusk, it is said to hold strong powers of protection and balance out our emotions. Gaining a heightened sense of intuition, creativity, and adaptability are just a few of this stunning, shimmering white and sometimes pale pink nacre's known effects on those who wear it.

Pearls

Pearls symbolize wisdom acquired through experience. They are believed to attract wealth and luck as well as offer protection. Known for their calming effect, pearls can balance one's karma and strengthen relationships. When a grain of sand enters a mollusk and irritates its delicate tissues the creature’s response is to carefully turn the irritant into a pearl by adding layer upon layer of smooth beauty until it becomes a comfortable and welcome part of its existence.

Shark

What is it about sharks and their teeth that has us so intrigued? Could it be that to know these monsters of the deep is to know the shadow within us? Perhaps if we wear the dagger-like teeth of such a predator then we feel we take on some of its power? Whatever the case, the shark has remained largely unchanged for tens of millions of years due to its amazing success as a predator. These huge fish represent the apex of what it means to be at the top of the food chain and can serve as a symbol of power, protection, and intrigue with the natural world.

FAQ

Can I resize this item?

If a product page does not have a drop down option for size selections, or if the product description does not state a need for the customer to input their desired size in the notes section of their purchase, then we are NOT able to resize the item. Some exceptions can be made with chain lengths. Please reach out to us at inspire@1888design.com and we will try to accommodate as best we can.

Are your earrings hypoallergenic?

All earring posts are made out of sterling silver, stainless steel, or brass metals unless otherwise stated in the product description.
