This sterling silver wrapped North Carolina travel token comes from the 1960s when the Shell gasoline company gave them out at their stations across the nation to encourage travelers to stop at their gas stations and collect them all as they made their way across the states. The token features an image of the state and its capitol on the front and a few fun state facts on the backside. The dogwood is the official state flower of North Carolina, so we found it fitting to create one from scratch in pure sterling silver and hang it from the token, which we then accompanied with a gorgeous little sterling-wrapped garnet. This trio is as unique as it is beautiful. Strung on a dainty 17" stainless steel oval link chain.

After each artifact or specimen has been discovered it is sent through a careful restoration process before being used in a design. North Carolina Shell Gas Station Token

This token of pure bronze has an eagle looking right with wings spread, perched on a horizontal pole draped with American flags on each end. It boasts the state flower (Dogwood), bird (Cardinal) and the fact that the US constitution was ratified there. North Carolina, also known as the Tarheel State, is a gorgeous place with coast and mountains unlike any other. The tokens themselves were given out from the Shell gas company attempting to get their customers to use Shell so they could collect them all.

Dogwood Flower

Interestingly, the Dogwood flower (Cornus florida) is the official state flower of both North Carolina and Virginia. According to botonists, the dogwood’s petals are actually not even petals at all- they call them bracts. These bracts are modified leaves that surround a cluster of about 20 tiny greenish-yellow flowers. After the flowers bloom, the white-colored bracts expand to attract pollinating insects. The dogwood also has close ties to Christianity, as legend says it is synonymous with the cross in which Jesus was crucified.

Garnet

Also known as the dragon's heart, this deep red and sturdy stone is commonly associated with creativity, sensuality and strength. The garnet represents the primordial fire, the creation of the world out of chaos, purification, and of course, love.

Can I resize this item?

If a product page does not have a drop down option for size selections, or if the product description does not state a need for the customer to input their desired size in the notes section of their purchase, then we are NOT able to resize the item. Some exceptions can be made with chain lengths. Please reach out to us at inspire@1888design.com and we will try to accommodate as best we can.

Are your earrings hypoallergenic?

All earring posts are made out of sterling silver, stainless steel, or brass metals unless otherwise stated in the product description. Sterling silver and stainless steel are both hypoallergenic metals. Brass can react differently among different skin types, so we advise knowing your body's tolerance to brass prior to purchasing earrings with brass ear posts. Again, all metals used are stated in each product's description tab.

Can I order this as a gift?
