~Chicago Cubs~

After the formalization of the "Laws Of Base Ball" in 1846 teams would soon begin popping up all around the country. However, the Chicago Cubs can boast the honor of the earliest formed active professional sports club in America. The Cubs started to play in 1870 in the National Association as The Chicago White Stockings and are the only team to continuously play in the same city since the formation of the National League in 1876. They weren't officially called The Cubs until 1907 and the final iteration of their logo as it's recognized today didn't come about until 1979, but their history remains a steady reminder of hometown pride should you be from Chicago of course. Ali, who is from a suburb of Chicago was pleased to find out upon our recent visit to Catalina Island in California that the Chicago Cubs have a rich history with the island. William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada bought the island of Catalina in 1919 with the very intentional plan to make it a playground for the rich. Wrigley's true passion was the Chicago Cubs and invited them to the island in 1920 which subsequently resulted in The Cubs having their spring training in Avalon a less populated section of the island, from 1921 to 1941 and again from 1946 to 1951. Wrigley built a spring training field that matched the dimensions of Chicago's Wrigley field so they wouldn't miss a step. The Cubs have played in a total of 11 world series, winning back-to-back series in 1907 and 1908 becoming the first major league team to play in three consecutive series and the first to win it two years in a row. After a 108-year gap, the cubs would once again win the world series in 2016 reviving a sense of hometown pride lost to the fairweather fans. There’s  a bit of lore surrounding the latter half of the infamous gap between series, known as the legend of the billy goat. In 1945 tavern owner William "Billy Goat" Sianis was stopped outside the Wrigley field gates before game 4 of the world series and was not allowed into the game because of the strong stench his goat admitted. The tavern owner then cursed the white sox exclaiming " You are going to lose this world series and you are never going to win another world series again!" And so, the Curse of the Billy Goat was born and loomed large over the club seemingly preventing the Cubs from winning a series until their curse was finally broken in 2016.

~Baseball~
Classic Americana, Baseball has been a part of the American story since a set of rules was laid out for the New York Knickerbockers and crickets New York Nines for what is widely agreed to be Baseballs's first official game. The game took place on June 1846 with a carefully laid out set of just 20 parameters that most closely resemble what we today call American Baseball. A member of the Knickerbockers was a medical doctor they called Doc Adams who soon became the club's president. He's also been called the father of baseball for his expansion of these 20 parameters into a more formalized set of rules they called the laws of baseball.
