As a symbol, dice represent luck and a chance for something more. We kiss the dice or blow on them to get them to fall the way we need. We’ll hold them to our chest and close our eyes to influence the way they will land. Whether you believe these superstitions will have an effect doesn’t matter. What matters is that we believe in that moment that we have some say in what is fundamentally a probabilistic universe. The observer effect as stated in quantum physics roughly states that nothing is decided or formed until the object is observed by a perceiving consciousness, so it sounds to me that we do have some say in creating a bit of our own luck.
Dice have at least 5,000 years of history as an equalizing tool of recreation. They were found carved from the knuckle bones of cloven-hoofed animals such as sheep, goats or cattle, or made from rectangular sticks carved for ancient games of chance. In 1333 BCE Tutankhamen’s tomb was found to contain many board games and knuckle bone dice.
After each artifact or specimen has been discovered it is sent through a careful restoration process before being used in a design. If a particularly unique patina is found to add design value to an artifact, it's preserved & sealed to ensure its longevity & protection.
