One of a Kind

Reimagined Components: This antique 1800s brass lion head dresser handle was repurposed into this striking statement piece by first cleaning and restoring the brass, then removing the mouth ring and adding two small holes for the chain attachment. These brass dresser handle lion heads are somewhat rare and each one has its own imperfections, making them beautiful one-of-a-kind components for us to repurpose into our jewelry. This lion has been strung on a 17" 4mm braided brass rope chain.

~Dresser Handle~

When it comes to dresser and drawer handles there is more history than you might expect. Since 1888 loves repurposing them for our jewelry, we thought we’d teach you a little about them. In the 1660s the brass loop handle with a sturdy ornate backing started showing up. A common one would be the lion's face with a loop in its mouth. The loop itself was often engraved as well for an extra classy touch. Before the 1660’s the Oak Period from about 1600 to 1660 had lovely, engraved hardwood handles which don’t repurpose quite as well as the brass for our pieces. Many of the handles we find are seventieth-century inspired brass, iron, or alloy handles but made in the ninetieth or early twentieth century.

~Lion~

As the traditional Leo totem, the lion is a figure of courage, loyalty, friendship and strength. Legend says that they sleep with open eyes, ready at all times. Primarily a nocturnal animal, the lion is a symbol of authority and command over subconscious thought.

In the realm of spirit animals, the lion wins the prize for the most relentless fighter in the face of life challenges. The presence of this power animal can mean that something “wild” or difficult to control is happening. As such, lions symbolize emotions that are difficult to manage, such as anger or fear. Wisdom, power, royalty, dignity, courage, justice, ferocity, dominion, authority, honor, strength and leadership- to name a few.

~Brass~

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc which has gained popularity because of its bright color and resistance to wear.
