This 1888 Design is a:

One of a Kind

Reimagined Components: Vintage die with hand-drilled amber companion beads strung on 21" 2mm gold-tone rolo chain.

1888's Take: "While drilling the amber beads to resize them I could smell the sweet scent of ancient sap... It made me feel that although everything is in a constant state of change there are elementals that remain, or at least outlast some of the changes. In this case the sap having undergone the process of fossilization still carrying with it its original sweetness underneath its now rocklike form. Fundamental sweetness paired with the probabilistic nature of the die... what an interesting and unique combination of concepts to carry with you."

~Amber~

Amber is fossilized tree resin, appreciated for its color and natural beauty since Neolithic times. The sap is the natural healer of the tree representing the ability to heal as well as protection from sickness.

~Dice~

Dice have at least 5000 thousand years of history as an equalizing tool of recreation. They were found carved from the knuckle bones of cloven-hoofed animals such as sheep, goats or cattle or made from rectangular sticks carved for ancient games of chance. In 1333 BCE Tutankhamen’s tomb was found to contain many board games and knuckle bone dice.

As a symbol dice represent luck and a chance for something more. We kiss the dice or blow on them to get them to fall the way we need. We’ll hold them to our chest and close our eyes to influence the way they will land…whether you believe these superstitions will have an effect doesn’t matter what matters is that we believe in that moment that we have some say in what is fundamentally a probabilistic universe. The observer effect as stated in quantum physics roughly says that nothing is decided or formed until the object is observed by a perceiving consciousness, so it sounds to me that we do have some say in creating a bit of our own luck.

After each artifact or specimen has been discovered it is sent through a careful restoration process before being used in a design. If a particularly unique patina is found to add design value to an artifact, it's preserved & sealed to ensure its longevity & protection.
