A “mosaic” is a piece of art comprised of small pieces of glass, stone, ceramic, broken pottery, or other materials that have been organized to create a pattern or representational image.
For thousands of years, turquoise has been prized as a symbol of wisdom, nobility, and immortality. In many Native American cultures, it represents the great spirit in the sky and is often referred to as the Sky Stone. It’s believed that if a crack forms in the stone, it has taken the injury for its wearer.
More than 2200 years ago, turquoise mosaics of spiritual significance were being created in Persia. The turquoise mosaic art form has a long history. In Mexico, turquoise mosaic masks were being made as early as 900 AD. Today, many contemporary artists continue to work in this tradition.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc which has gained popularity because of its bright color and resistance to wear.
