~Brothel Tokens~
Coin collectors sometimes refer to these (usually) brass coins as “Fantasy Brothel Tokens” because in reality, these were only in circulation as a means to lure young men inside the brothels where at that point the tokens were pretty much only good for a laugh. Once inside, the would-be patrons would then be treated the same as any that arrived without a token in hand. Although the morally polarizing services promised on these tokens can evoke hot debate amongst people of opposing opinions, they can be undeniably comical in terms of their stamped verbiage. The proprietors almost always had a quirky name and the services promised seemed straight out of an old western movie. These coins do seem to create a nostalgia for a bygone time that was truly different, yet in some ways very much the same as the present. Tokens for brothels have been issued since Roman times, perhaps even before. Whatever your feelings on the history of such artifacts may be, their role in history's story regarding what some call the world’s oldest profession, and pure human nature, is undeniable.
After each artifact or specimen has been discovered it is sent through a careful restoration process before being used in a design. If a particularly unique patina is found to add design value to an artifact, it's preserved & sealed to ensure its longevity & protection.
